Black Roles in the Revolutionary War

Black South Carolinians took part in the war in many ways — and not all by choice. Each profile states the person's documented role, status, and affiliation. We do not label anyone a soldier or Patriot without evidence, and where accounts conflict, we show both.

No profiles in this group yet. More research is needed.

Promises of freedom — and what happened after

British commanders offered freedom to some enslaved people who escaped to their lines, while some Patriot enlistees were promised freedom for service. These promises were often broken. Many who reached British lines died of disease, were re-enslaved, or were carried to the Caribbean; others left as free Black Loyalists for Nova Scotia and later Sierra Leone. Each profile notes what is documented for that individual.
